Setting up FTP access

To connect to an FTP server, you need to know the FTP address and other values. When you enter the values, you can connect to the server immediately or save the values for reuse. You can also set a current server for immediate access from the FTP clients.

Important: Before you set up FTP access, make sure that you have TCP/IP networking set up properly on your computer.

To set up repeated connection to an FTP server from either client and any site:

1 Choose Edit > Preferences, expand Network in the left pane, and click FTP Server.

You can also display FTP Server preferences by choosing Edit from the menu at the top right of the FTP Browser or of FTP & WebDAV Server site settings. If you take this approach, you can store the values you are about to enter in the browser or in settings for the current site as well as in Network preferences.

2 Click New in the right pane.

3 Do all of the following, using values provided by the FTP server administrator:

  • Type an address in the Server text box.
  • Type a user ID in the Username text box.
  • Type a password in the Password text box.
  • Type a pathname in the Directory text box. If your access privileges are limited to your personal folder, you may be able to leave the text box blank.

  • 4 If necessary, click Advanced and do either of the following:

  • Provide a port number in the Port text box. The default port number, 21, is usually correct.
  • Select Use Passive Mode. You may need this selection if the FTP server is protected by a firewall.

  • 5 Click OK. This save the values you entered for reuse from any site.

To set up a specific site for connection to an FTP server:

    1 Open the site.

2 Click the Site Settings button () on the toolbar or choose Site > Settings, and click FTP & WebDAV Server in the left pane. Use the FTP Server section in the following steps.

3 Provide server address, directory, user ID, and password values, selecting Save to save the password for reuse. (Mac OS Keychain users: Don't select Save. The password you typed will be added to the Keychain automatically.)

Instead of typing the full path to the directory, you can click Browse and browse to it.

4 If necessary, provide a port number or select passive mode.

5 To add the server to FTP Server Network preferences, choose Add Current Server from the menu at the top right.

6 Click OK. The server you set up becomes the current server for the site.

To set up the FTP Browser for immediate connection to an FTP server:

1 Choose File > FTP Browser.

2 Provide server address, directory, user ID, and password values, selecting Save to save the password for reuse. (Mac OS Keychain users: Don't select Save. The password you typed will be added to the Keychain automatically.)

3 If necessary, click Advanced and provide a port number or select passive mode.

4 Do either of the following:

  • Click Connect to connect to the server immediately.
  • Choose Add Current Server from the menu at the top right to add the server to FTP Server Network preferences.
